How long has it been since you updated your resume?  When you apply for a new job, are you tailoring your resume for each position, or are you simply using the same resume over and over again? Remember, often times you will be competing with hundreds of other candidates, so it is important that your resume stand apart from the rest. Read these 5 tips below to help you polish your resume and land your next job interview.

Don’t write your life story on paper. Do remember that the purpose of a resume is to land an interview.

A resume is a brief and concise summary of your skills, abilities and accomplishments that apply to a particular career. Your resume is also a sales tool. It will either make or break your chances to land an interview. A recruiter will spend an average of 5-7 seconds reading each resume, so keep that in mind while writing your resume. Make sure you are highlighting your most marketable skills and attributes. If you make the mistake of writing an autobiography, it might just get lost in the shuffle.

Create a custom Resume.

Tailor your resume to highlight the skills specific to the job you are applying for in order to increase your chances of getting an interview. You do not need to start from scratch, but shorten or remove parts of your resume that do not fit the job description. This will also help keep your resume short and concise.

Use Keywords from the job description.

Read the job description and pull out a few keywords. These words should be action verbs, not adjectives (I.e. supervise, inspect, prepare). Next, describe your relevant experience performing the specific tasks listed in the job description. If you take the time to mention these keywords in your resume, you will increase your chances of landing an interview.

Write with the perfect candidate in mind.

Take a moment to think like the employer. Ask yourself, “What would the perfect candidate look like? What qualities, skills and abilities would they have?” Write your resume for that specific audience, the employer. When you have an understanding of what they are looking for, it makes it much easier to peak their interest. With that in mind, pick a few attributes from your ”perfect candidate” and write how you embody those attributes.

Add your personal interests only if they relate to the job description.

If your personal interests are relevant to the job description, don’t be afraid to include these in your resume.
For example, if the job requires you to carry a firearm, specify that you belong to a shooting team. If a certain level of physical fitness is required, you could mention that you enjoy rock climbing or running obstacle courses like the Tough Mudder. Only include examples that show your interest in job-related activities outside of work.

If you are just starting out in your career, figure out what field of security you would like to pursue and identify which certifications, training and education requirements are specific to the chosen field.  You can also look at specific job postings to get an idea of what skills companies and recruiters are looking for in each security field.

If you have worked in security for a number of years and are looking to advance your career, make sure you do not stay in the same job for a long time. In fact, don’t be afraid to change jobs every few years to get ahead. Sometimes, the fastest way to get a promotion is to change jobs. As long as you are moving up the ladder, it is okay to change jobs every two to three years.

You might also ask yourself, “What’s more important – education and training or work experience?”
Both are important, however employers are looking for the experienced candidate. Make sure you pursue the prerequisites for each position (for example, a degree), but highlight your experience during the interview and in your resume when you are trying to advance to the next stage in your security career.

Finally, pay attention to the trends. The security industry is dictated by events that drive certain growth in specific fields. For example, after 911, there was an increase in demand for air marshals and anti-terrorism experts. Now, the latest trend is cyber security. With the increasing threat of global terrorism, cyber security professionals will be high in demand. So, if you are looking for job security in the security industry, you might want to consider pursuing a career in cyber security since there is already a shortage of cyber security professionals at the present time. The qualifications for cyber security will be pretty well documented, so find out what certifications and educational skills will be required if you decide to pursue this field.
